It kind of the same idea as sprite working. But in this new way you get the option to crop the image in different from "CSS Sprites" there you have to declare specific width and height.

For example in the old way of "CSS Sprites", if the width/height is bigger than the part of the image that you want, you will see parts of other images that you don't want to see.
